Growing old, still young at heart
In the coming years, a generation with great expectations from life will retire. This is the first generation that grew up with a “teenage culture,” and who questioned and challenged old values and revolted against society. Staying young at heart while growing old means that they expect a great deal from their retirement.

In the LOTS of Expectations collection, LOTS presents new products and services that respond to the wishes, needs and demands of this generation.

Check out the new collection to take a sneak peek at what their upcoming lives as retirees may look like!

Welcome Sara, LOTS in-house researcher!
Sara Ljungblad, Ph. D. in Human Computer Interaction, has received a three year postdoc research project at LOTS.

The project will investigate experiential qualities based on the users perspectives of services and products. Existing experiential qualities in professional environments can be matched with related and desirable qualities that are prominent in everyday life and in hobbies. This is intended to support the design process for professional environments, and give an complementing perspective to design processes that focus on improving usability. Sara will be working on developing methods used at LOTS.

Sara Ljungblad finished her dissertation at Stockholm University in 2008, with the thesis: Beyond users: Grounding Technology in Experience. She has previously worked at Mobile Life Centre in Stockholm, at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, UK, and at the Viktoria Institute in Gothenburg.

Power to the User
Getinge Infection Control is a unique company. Since its founding over 100 years ago, the company from the small town Getinge in Sweden has stood for innovation and technological progress in the field of disinfection and sterilization for the healthcare and life science environments. Today they are considered market leaders within the field and are unique in offering a complete system to their customers - from the operating room to the sterilization department and back to the operating room. The link in this system – and what ensures an efficient work flow - is the loading equipment. When Getinge SMART, a new generation loading equipment was to be developed, LOTS was assigned for the user studies, concepts, product design and design control in the project.

The core of Getinge SMART is ergonomics, which is about letting people work in harmony with the objects they use and the tasks they perform. Ergonomic solutions for the loading equipment is in other words to create conditions for better health in the everyday life for the user - and an efficient workflow in the system for the customer.

With the innovative framework design, ergonomic handles with an integrated control unit and all equipment fitted with quality wheels, LOTS has enabled for the user to easily maneuver the trolley, to move heavy loads and to avoid non-ergonomic working positions.

The cost-efficient and flexible modular product architecture, with common components and interfaces, paves the way for customized solutions and creates a unique Getinge design recognition that runs like a red line through the entire range of loading trolleys.

LOTS assignment was to coordinate design through the product family and to guarantee the design requirements through the product development process and toll gates, which generated in-house routines and a secured design quality.

Recently at Medica fair in Düsseldorf, a number of products creating a family of loading equipment, was presented. The response from the market is unanimous: Getinge SMART is right from the start a total success – Power to the user!

Spreading the word…
Memento is an urn for burials at sea. It builds on the humanistic burial ceremony that disregards religious tradition and instead focuses on Man’s role in nature. The urn is made from pressed paper and dissolves in water over time. Messages for the deceased can be written on the surface of the urn and small objects and notes can be placed in a pocket at the top of the urn.

After being presented in the “LOTS of Limited” collection, the urn received a great deal of attention from burial businesses worldwide. The urn is now produced and sold by the American company Passages International Inc, world leaders in biodegradable funeral products.

A big step for small houses!
Byggnadsvård Nääs is an architectural heritage information centre with a library, advice service, exhibition and shop. The large summer exhibition was opened on May 29 and featured the first mini-house* fair ever held in Sweden, as well as a permanent exhibition hall displaying environmentally friendly building materials and products from local producers. The aim of the exhibition is to stimulate visitors to think and shop locally and to use traditional building materials and techniques, to the benefit both of traditional building culture and local trade and industry. Erik Mattson at LOTS Design is the designer behind the exhibition, in collaboration with Byggnadsvård Nääs, and has been involved in and supported the process through seminars and workshops on sustainable construction during the year preceding the exhibition.
*mini-houses is a concept in Sweden for houses that don’t need building permission and has a maximum size of 15m2. They are mainly meant as garden sheds or extra space but has today been developed for multi-purpose function, like small holiday houses etc as well. Link to the BOD 2010 homepage.

Truly hands-free! through user-driven innovation.
LOTS, in partnership with Brusell Dental A / S, HMC and PRO, develops and designs a tongue-controlled interface, called CapMouse, that allows people with difficulties using their hands due to disability or in situations where hands are already occupied, to handle communication technology. CapMouse has attracted attention for its potential to address user needs in many different applications and fields. Initially, CapMouse is developed through support by VINNOVA within the EU-funded program AAL, which aims to improve older people's living situations. The goal is to include older people with disabilities in an active social life through better being able to handle modern communications technology, as mobile phones, computers, etc. The next application area will turn to dentists and surgeons, to allow more freedom in the working situation.

In the project, LOTS carry out user studies through workshops, physical tests and interviews, analyzes and identifies market requirements and opportunities, are designing the products and adapting them for industrialization.

Cochlear Baha BP100 sound processor allows hearing impaired back into society
Today, a state-of-the-art sound processor, the Cochlear Baha BP100, is using the body’s natural ability to conduct sound via direct bone conduction, making the delivery of refined sound a thing of simplicity.

Cochlear Bone Anchored Solutions, Sweden, have been leading the research field in bone conduction hearing solutions for decades. The Baha system is the most advanced implantable bone conduction hearing solution available.
The Cochlear Baha BP100, the newest sound processor for the Baha system, offers a substantial increase in quality of life for people suffering conductive hearing loss, mixed hearing loss or single-sided sensorineural deafness. The outcome of our research is a Baha sound processor that delivers more than 25% improvement in speech understanding in noise compared to previous Baha sound processors, says Mark Flynn, PhD., Director of Research and Applications for Cochlear Bone Anchored Solutions.

LOTS Design has worked with Cochlear since 2004 on the external design of Baha sound processors, including the Cochlear Baha BP100.

Algae Power for sustainable living
Continously LOTS takes initiatives to develop innovative concepts to highlight opportunities for sustainable future product development and sustainable society as a whole.

What will the fuel of the future be?
There are many candidates but one of the most promising is the initiative with fast-growing algae to produce hydrogen. Scientific research has come quite far and we at LOTS like to visualize and explore how algae farms can be a part of the urban landscape. Included in urban objects and structures, the algae farms are creating patterns, colors and forms making an attractive meeting between nature and the urban landscape.

The issue is in focus when researchers and business developers meet up to explore future possibilities with innovations inspired by nature at Bioinspired Forum at Albanova/KTH in Stockholm on October 15. The aim of this event is to catalyze both design and technology transfer among science, entrepreneurship, design, and architecture. It will allow business developers and investors to identify a vast new field for investments.

Teaching Design Thinking - Business & Design at Gothenburg University one of the best
BusinessWeek has in a recent issue listed thirty educations considered to be the best in the interdisciplinary field of design and business, and the two-year master education Business & Design is one of them. The education is a partnership between HDK School of Design and Crafts and the School of Business, Economics and Law at Gothenburg University. The program, started in 2008, is targeted at professionals interested in using the design process to build smarter businesses.

LOTS Iréne Stewart Claesson was leading the project between 2004-2007 to establish contacts between the two education systems and is one of the initiators to the education.
As the world's business landscape evolves, an interdisciplinary approach to solving problems is demanded. BusinessWeek means design thinking brings creative techniques and innovation to business, and rises the question; how to best educate the design thinkers and innovators of the future?
LOTS has an active part in the education program, being responsible for the course of integrated projects, lecturing about design strategy and coaching in projects.
