Sustainability as business
SP Energy Technology, Systems Analysis
The Systems Analysis section of the fast growing SP Energy Technology department develops sustainable solutions for society of the future. When they were planning to move, they asked Lots to design their new office using only second-hand furnishings. The objective was to explore the possibilities of finding and buying second-hand furniture for an entire office for 36 staff members.
But this is about more than just buying second-hand furniture. The point of departure for our sustainability analysis was to investigate how the office is used in everyday practice.
When we interviewed the staff members, we found that more meeting-rooms was a far more important requirement than fixed, individual work-places. By making optimal use of the existing premises we managed to create office space with several different types of rooms and 36 flexible work places, all with a good working environment but also with a personal touch, as we bought second-hand quality furniture that could take restoration.
A bonus was that SP now boasts a unique environment, expressing the direction of its work, and a conceptually interesting environment that the staff members enjoy working in—yet another sustainability aspect.
Together with the landlord, Akademiska Hus, the building contractors were involved in the process, to encourage more re-use and as little renovation work as possible. The result is a modern and flexible office with an entirely unique character that expresses what SP does and represents.
A preliminary assessment of the project in Gothenburg shows that savings of up to 35 % can be made by using second-hand furniture. As a sign of the SP staff appreciation of the project it was decided to apply the re-use theme to other SP locations as well, among them the office at KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology, in Stockholm. In the long run, we hope that this will inspire more sustainable development in the furniture industry and among its customers, and reverse the trend of replacing entire office interiors.
